The Water Engineering Branch is focused on delivering a range of
seminars outlining pertinent issues to the Water Industry in Victoria,
and throughout Australia. In conjunction with these activities,
the branch seeks to host a student industry night to foster the
development of young engineers, and organises a student prize.

Seminar: Future Flood Resilience: Victoria's Next Statewide
Strategy
A Victorian Water Engineering Branch event
The presentation will focus on the likelihood and
consequences of flooding and how they are likely to change in the
future as a result of:
- Population growth
and increasing urban density combined with
- Climate change
and rising seal levels
A systems thinking approach will demonstrate how flood
risk management factors are inter-twined with other issues such
as water scarcity, environmental water stress, and carbon pollution
challenges.
Extrapolation from a large body of past research will
show how aggregate flood risk can be contained and reduced over
time provided a systematic, "all risks" approach is implemented.
The presentation will cover how the actions proposed will affect
different types of flooding (such as riverine, stormwater and coastal)
to different degrees.
The paramount need to support and engage municipal
councils in managing urban stormwater flood risks across the State
will be emphasised.
Benefit-cost analysis results will indicate that the
long-term benefits in terms of reduced damage would far outweigh
the costs of implementation. The presentation will challenge
the conventional view that development comes first and flood risk
is something we have to accept as an unfortunate reality.
Guest Speaker: Nick Ronan. Nick is the "one-man-army"
responsible for reviewing flood risk management in Victoria and
developing a revised strategy for the future. He works in
the Floodplain Management Unit at DSE - Office of Water. His
previous experience includes nearly thirty years with Melbourne
Water and a couple of years with the Australian Dairy Industry.
